My Kids in Music Videos

A former colleague of mine quoted a song by the band “Lyapis Trubetskoy” yesterday, which suddenly reminded me that my daughters had a tiny involvement in the band’s next album.

Back in 2006, when my wife’s younger sister, Olya, was studying to become a TV director, she had to shoot a music video for a coursework project. She decided to create a video for the song “New Time” by the band/artist “Mara.” For the lead role, she chose her niece—my eldest daughter Sasha, who was 5 years old at the time.

This became her first experience in a music video. I think she looks pretty cool in it:

Then, both she and our second daughter, Polina, appeared many times as co-hosts on the children’s educational program “Vneklassny Chas” produced by the “Novy Gorod” television company (which aired on the “Lad” channel). However, I haven’t been able to find any episodes with them online.

In 2008, “Lyapis Trubetskoy” released the powerful album “Manifest,” and the music video for the title track was directed by my friend Matvey Saburov—who was once one of the leaders of the ethno-folk band “Plato.” In the video, the chorus is sung by many people, each for just a fraction of a second. Matvey wanted to include children, so he filmed Sasha again, although Polina also “sneaked” into the frame. They shot for several hours at our home, but in the video, it’s literally a few frames totaling less than a second. Here’s one of the frames:

And the full video is available on the Lyapis’ channel:

So now we can say with a clear conscience that we’ve contributed to music video culture.

P.S. Although, with the band “Plato,” I played as a session percussionist a few times in Germany (that’s what it would be called now), and I was also the lighting director for two of their concerts.
